How to Work With a Photographer to Create Content for Blog

How do you shoot content for blog and or social media? Maybe you take the photos yourself or a friend or significant other takes them for you. When I started using my Instagram to work with brands as a mom influencer, I shot a lot of the content myself with my phone. As I had more and bigger opportunities, I realized I either needed to purchase a DSLR or hire a photographer. Since I had a passion for photography, I decided to buy an entry-level camera, but I was prepared to hire a photographer!

Think of it this way, I could either purchase a professional camera and lens for $3k (this is on the low to mid end) or I could shoot with a photographer for $250 per month for a year. Let’s say I at least get paid on one campaign per month for $500. I’ve not only made a profit, but saved myself time from learning how to properly use the camera, wrangling my kids for photos, not having to shoot everything with a tripod or have to ask a friend, relative or my husband to take the photos for me when it’s convenient for them. This is all coming from personal experience lol.

So, I wanted to share another perspective from a professional blogger who decided to take the leap and hire me for her blog and social media content! Farrah of Estrella Fashion Report is a Tampa-based plus size style blogger, and one of my longest and most consistent clients!  I was so excited that she decided to share her experience with you, and hope this helps you if you’re considering hiring a photographer for your blog. We’ve worked together on some amazing campaigns for brands and she’s even gotten paid more because they loved our work!

1. How did you start your blog and what inspired you to share your personal style?

Farrah: I started blogging 7 years ago as a hobby—something to do after my divorce. I started writing about fashion news, but only recently, I started sharing my personal style with my followers at their request. As a size 24 plus-size Latina, a lot of women could identify with me, and wanted to see plus size representation in the fashion industry.

2. What are the benefits of working with a photographer on your blog/social media content?

Farrah: I think working with a photographer gives your blog a more professional, polished look. Brands will know that you are taking it seriously, that you mean business. And that they can put their brand name in your hands, because you will do it justice and treat it with respect. It is also aesthetically pleasing, and you are more likely to get reposted if you have good pictures. People are very visual, and having pretty pictures can create engagement too.

3. How often do you think you should work with the photographer?

Farrah: As often as you can. Plan your looks ahead of time, and try to shoot multiple looks in one sitting to save money.

4. When is the right time to hire a photographer for your blog?

Farrah: I say when you can afford it. It can get a little pricey if you are not ready, but the rewards are worth it. When I started doing outfit posts, my husband used to take my pictures, my friends, anyone that was available. I say this because I don’t want to discourage anyone. Don’t let money or not being able to afford professional photography stop you from starting your blog or following your dreams. Start where you are, and if you can only afford to take pictures once a month then so be it, but you have to start somewhere. Go for it!

5. How do you plan for shoots?

Farrah: A lot goes into planning a shoot. Some of them are done specifically in collaboration with a brand, some of them are specifically for creating content, depending on the season, trends of the moment, etc…But honestly, some of my best pictures have come from when I plan the least. I buy an outfit, I take pictures with it without too much planning, just because I like it. Sometimes it happens that way.

6. Who inspires you?

Farrah: Stylewise, I look up to a lot of other bloggers (plus-size and straight size) to get inspiration. I also love Fashion Week. I like looking at the runway looks for inspiration. Inspiration can come from anywhere—from someone on the streets, an old photograph, a magazine, a website, and more. It’s hard to say.

7. What are some of your favorite brand collaborations?

Farrah: I love working with plus-size brands like Lane Bryant, Catherines, Avenue, Torrid, Ashley Stewart and beauty brands such as Dermae and Pacifica. So far, shooting the Ashley Stewart extended size campaign for their website has been one of the highlights of my career. Also, winning the Lane Bryant contest during Full Figured Fashion Week in New York City a few years ago was also fun. Last year, I collaborated with Catherines during the holidays for some outfit looks and that was pretty cool too.

8. How do you find brands to collaborate with?

Farrah: Attending events is a great way to connect with brands, and then later pitch to them to collaborate. Also, writing about the brands that you like and tagging them on social media can catch the brand’s attention. Content is the key. Write great content and eventually they will find you.

Thank you, Farrah! We will be doing an Instagram Live on Tuesday 2/5 at 11am EST to chat more about how to take your blog to the next level, and hiring a photographer to shoot content. Have questions for us? Leave them in the comments below!
