My trip alone to Miami for the Workparty Book Tour

Where do I begin?! When I first decided to start my photography business, I didn’t know which direction I wanted to go. I’d been photographing my daughter for brands for a while, and naturally thought I’d be a family photographer. Or maybe photograph other kids for fashion brands. I knew I didn’t want to photograph weddings, but still wasn’t sure what my niche was.

It wasn’t until I start researching local businesses to offer my photography services that I kept coming back to boutiques, fashion brands and then bloggers. I follow some amazing style bloggers with beautiful photos and started seeing who the photographers were that they were tagging when I realized it was an actual thing. I could grow my business working with new and established bloggers! And brands! I’ve always loved blogging—fashion blogging specifically—and it’s so exciting to connect with local bloggers, influencers and small business owners to take their brand to the next level!

That brings me to the Workparty event in Miami. I want to continue to grow and provide value to my clients more than just pretty pictures. I’m a huge fan of Create and Cultivate and the boss babe behind it all, Jaclyn Johnson. I bought her book Workparty when it launched and immediately signed up for the book tour stop in Miami. I had to meet her, thank her for inspiring me and meet some other creative ladies who are going along this journey just like me! So I booked a hotel (last minute lol) and hopped in the car to go to the event.

I was a little unsure about going it alone as I’ve never traveled alone, but I’m so glad I did! I decided not to fly this time but I definitely will in December for the Vision Summit. Either. Way, I had fun playing podcasts, listening to music and just enjoying the time to myself. Would I do it again? Heck yea!

The Event

I seriously had the best time. Going to an event alone can be very scary, especially for me. I’m not a naturally social person, but when you’re self employed, you have to break out of your shell very quickly! I would’ve never gone to a networking event five years ago, or even two years ago, but there’s something about doing something you thought you never would. Earning your own self respect is the most powerful thing.

So, I did exactly what I set out to do—met Jaclyn (she is the sweetest and very down to earth), got my book signed and met a new friend, Melanie! She’s an aspiring style blogger (go figure!) and made a good drive from Jupiter to come to event as well. We had a great convo on pursuing a creative career, blogging and overcoming our fears of meeting new people.

Before the book signing, Jaclyn sat with Lo Bosworth (remember her from The Hills?!) about her business lovewellness.co selling health and wellness products for women. They talked about the ins and outs of running a business and opened it up for Q&A. Some of my takeaways:

  •  Long form blogging- adopt it! It’s a great way for you to put your thoughts together and it’s a site that you personally own. In other words, don’t put all your eggs in one basket through social media.
  • Have an innovative idea! How can you bring something new and fresh to an industry that may seem already saturated?

I also had a chance to shoot with a local Miami blogger, Nadia! She has the best style and I can’t wait to shoot with her again.

Overall, it was an amazing trip. I’m sharing this to of course document my experience, but also hopefully inspire someone who is thinking about starting that business, launching that blog or traveling alone to make your dreams come true. Just do it! You’ll be so glad you did.
