How to Create a Moodboard for Your Brand

Before you hire a brand photographer, graphic designer, website designer, copywriter, etc, create a moodboard for your brand aesthetic.

This is the easiest way to jumpstart your brand, and it literally costs you nothing.

Your aesthetics are the foundation of brand recognition: your photos, videos, logo, graphics, colors. Make sure they reflect your brand to make it memorable and attractive. Building a brand that attracts your ideal client starts with your visuals.

Here’s how to do it:

Gather inspo. Magazines are my go-to. Every month, I pick up the latest lifestyle magazines, flip through and cut out images and words that speak to me. You can also pull inspo from Pinterest or lifestyle sites you frequent.

Create a collage on a physical or digital board. There’s nothing like pinning those images and words to a board and visually seeing it come together. Look for images with a similar color palette or colors that feel like you. If you aren’t sure, take a look at your wardrobe and draw inspiration from there. Create sections for outfits, fonts, colors and and poses you want to try. Focus on the overall mood of your imagery, including mood, lighting and props.

Look at your moodboard daily. Put your board on your desk or if you create it on Pinterest, print it out and hang it somewhere in your workspace or save it as your computer wallpaper. Those words and images will inspire everything you do while building your brand without you even realizing it.

Update your brand moodboard regularly. When you come across a post on Instagram, Pinterest or any online site, save it to your board right away. Continue curating your board as your brand evolves and grows.

Now, when you’re ready to hire creatives to bring your aesthetics to life, you already have a starting point!
